Pony's Expeditions is located in the town of Caraz, about 67 km north of Huaraz. At an altitude almost 1,000m lower than Huaraz, this pleasant, less touristy town enjoys a lush warm atmosphere and is known by the locals as 'sweet Caraz'.
Run by outdoor enthusiast Alberto Cafferata, Pony's Expeditions specializes in customized adventure sports such as trekking, mountain biking, rock and ice climbing and fishing in the Cordilleras Blanca, Negra and Huayhuash and Cusco area.
Alberto speaks good English and reasonable French and is incredibly knowledgeable and helpful if you require information when planning a trip to the area.
The range of services provided by Pony's Expeditions is extensive. A brief summary of some of the most popular adventure activities are given below:-
Trekking
The classic loop Santa Cruz to Vaqueria or Llanganuco can be made in 4 or 5 days respectively in a 'pooled' service (multinational groups from 2 to 16 persons) as well as private and customized programs.
Day Tours
Day tours to Chavin and Pastoruri Glacier with transport being in a smaller more comfortable 8 person tour van.
Other tours include trips to Paron lake, Cañon del Pato , Puyas Raimondii at Winchus in the Cordillera Negra. This area is far easier, closer, cheaper and more scenic than going to the Sector Carpa on the way to Pastoruri.

Some of the highlights are:-
1. Portachuelo Llanganuco to Yungay, This amazing 'Downhill' drives you down from 4750
mts to 2500 mts (the bottom of the valley) along 35 km of dirty road.
Transportation 'uphill' is made in vans, of course!
2. Paron Lake. Another downhill from 4200 to 2300 mts along 32 km.
3. Puyas Raimondii at Winchus, Links the top of the Cordillera Negra to Caraz, descending from 4200 to 2300
mts. Once at the top you see the Pacific Ocean to the West, twist over your heel to the East and 120
kms of Cordillera Blanca are seen.
4. Cañón del Pato. Ride through the 35 tunnels down to Huallanca. Lunch and back to Caraz by
van. 35 kmts.
5. Cross Country. Riding from Pueblo Libre to Caraz across rivers, forest, desert-like paths, cactus on an easy dirty road
with almost no climb. 9 kms
