Selva Sur (ACSS) Amazon Conservation

Introduction Travel Code Local Initiatives EcoTourism Links

Selva Sur  • Conservation Association for the Southern Rainforest of Peru (ACSS)

The ACSS, also known as Selva Sur, founded in 1984, is one of the most active conservation organizations in Peru. Moreover, it is the largest and most active organization based not in Lima, but rather in the provinces at the edge of the southern rainforests of Peru. These rainforests are the most species-rich and pristine in the entire Amazon basin.

Selva Sur has relatively modest resources, but being unusually lean and effective in delivering on-the-ground conservation has allowed Selva Sur to deliver more rainforest conservation than any other group in Peru and possibly the world.

Some of the projects of the ACSS include:
1. The scientific exploration, establishment, protection, and zoning of the 1.5 million hectare Tambopata-Candamo Reserved Zone.

2. Environmental education in Cusco, Puerto Maldonado, Machu Picchu, and the Blanquillo Conservation Center.

3. Preparation and national broadcast in Peru of an original, 27-minute television documentary about the Manu Biosphere Reserve in Partnership with Superflow Corporation of the USA.

4. The establishment of a private ACSS Manu Cloud Forest Reserve at Quebrada Union adjacent to Manu National Park.

5. Logistical support and awards of merit for the guards and directors of the Manu National Park.

6. Field research on game density near Indian villages in the Manu National Park.

7. Field research on the conservation and nesting ecology of the large macaws in Manu.

8. Field research on the biology of Giant Otters in Manu.

9. Research on the theory and practice of ecotourism as a rainforest conservation strategy.

10. Development of a Brazilnut co-op on the Madre de Dios river adjacent to the Tambopata-Candamo Reserved Zone.

11. Development of environmentally-friendly alpaca co-op for highland Indians on the southern border of Manu Park .

Contributions to the ACSS are tax-deductible in the U.S., when checks are made out ot Friends of the Peruvian Rainforest. FPR passes along 100% of any gifts for ACSS. In Peru the ACSS is a legal, registered charity.
