Description:

This popular budget hotel is situated next to the San Francisco Convent and 4 blocks from the Plaza de Armas (main square).

It's a fine old colonial building that is slowly being restored, and makes an excellent base to explore Lima and to meet with other backpackers from all over the world. The walls are full of paintings, and statues and plants adorn every possible corner. You'll find a garden up on the roof complete with crawling tortoises and various caged birds. It's a good place to relax and have a beer. There is also a travel agency with plenty of helpful information, message boards, a book exchange, good cafe, and luggage storage facilities. Security appears a little informal although there are lockers that you can use so you may want to bring your own padlock. If you want hot water get up early. Videos shown at night. A little bit noisy.

If you are looking for a great budget hotel in the heart of Lima this is the place for you. It is just a couple of blocks from the main square and just opposite the San Francisco Church. It has amazing character and history. I was travelling on my own so it was a great relief to meet other backpackers. I stayed in a private room with bathroom, the hot water was reliable and the room was cleaned every day. The Hotel Espana is a really friendly place to stay. The travel packages that the hotel organizes are a bargain. I highly recommend this hotel to backpackers travelling on their own but I don't think my parents would like it. Central Lima is not a safe place to be with plenty of shady characters hanging around on street corners. If I ever decide to go back to Lima I think I would probably look for a hotel in the safer Miraflores district.

Overall rating 7/10 (June 2008 Derek Miller, Canada)

Noisey, a bit untidy, but great fun. Very convenient if you want to visit the places of interest in downtown Lima. Hostal Espaņa is right opposite San Francisco Convent and its catacombs and just a few blocks from the main square and parliament building. Hot water was a bit unreliable during peaks times.
