Description

The Machu Picchu Sanctuary Lodge is the only hotel located adjacent to the ruins of Machu Picchu. All of the other hotels can be found down in the Urubamba Valley in the town of Aguas Calientes. The hotel is owned by Orient Express who also own Hotel Monasterio in Cusco and also run the railway between Cusco and Machu Picchu. The hotel was refurbished in 2001 and upgraded from a 3 star hotel to a "deluxe lodge". The hotel now has 29 rooms (10 of which have preferential views) and 2 suites although none of the rooms have direct views of the actual ruins themselves. As you would expect, all of the rooms are comfortable and well equipped, but it is the unique location that you are really paying for. The room rates are ridiculously overpriced but the hotel is nearly always full so book well in advance. "Comfortable, good service" - South American Handbook.

Services

All rooms equipped with private bathrooms, cable TV, VCR, mini bar and safety deposit box.

Laundry facilities available

Restaurant (Peruvian and international cuisine)

Snack Bar

Overall Rating 3/10 (22 Nov 2007 E. Newton L.A.)

"Paying US$765 for a room for just one night is an absolute disgrace when there are so many poor people in Peru, guests should feel real guilty at their lack of cultural sensitivity. The hotel is foreign owned so none of the profits stay in Peru, how can you possibly recommend this hotel on your website?"
